What is a Virtual, Client-Centered Law Firm?
My law office, The Law Office of Matthew Scott Martin, LLC, is a virtual, client-centered law firm in Pueblo, Colorado.
Let’s break it down.
As Jack Newton, CEO and founder of Clio, wrote in his book, The Client-Centered Law Firm, “It’s important not to lose sight of what it means to be a client-centered law firm: knowing what your clients want, and giving that to them in the simplest way possible.”
I know that you, the client, demand effortless experiences. Heck, I demand effortless experiences. I may not be perfect in providing those kinds of experiences, but you can bet that I am continually striving to provide them to my clients and do so in the most efficient way possible (which makes my life much easier).
What is a virtual law firm?
A virtual law firm is cloud-based.
As a virtual law firm, I have lower overhead and so I can serve clients better with competitive rates and more efficient services. In this day-and-age, you demand effortless experiences with vendors, whether online or not. There is no reason you cannot demand the same from me.
Some examples of the effortless experiences I offer:
Secure: Your cloud-based data is protected by encrypted, secure technology, such as Clio Connect (more on Clio Connect below).
I also use two-factor authentication which adds an additional layer of security to my Clio account and your data.
Secure Payments: You can securely make electronic payments to the firm via a bank-grade encryption system provided by Clio.
Electronic Signatures: You can electronically sign PDF documents from your smartphone or computer and with a click of a button send them back to me.
Text Messaging: You can text me to your heart’s content. I don’t like texting and, in fact, used to tell clients not to text me.
But, I recently realized (better late than never) that by demanding clients not to text me, I was not meeting them where they are. A lot of my clients love texting and it’s their main online communication method.
So, I did some research and discovered a tool, iMazing, that allows me to easily organize text messages by client name, transfer those texts to my computer, and turn those messages into a PDF, which I store in the client’s secure, encrypted cloud folder.
Easy Intake: I can send a prospective client an email link to a matter intake form to fill out at their convenience, then when they complete it, the form gets sent back to me.
Easy Scheduling: I can email a scheduler to a prospective client who can select an appointment date and time at their convenience for a phone or video conference with me.
How does my law firm provide an effortless experience to someone who is not tech savvy?
Not everyone uses technology or even the latest technology, and others are lights years ahead of everyone else. In a client-centered law firm, it is important for me to meet you, the client, where you are instead of insisting that you be tech savvy if you are not.
I can still use high tech on the back end to give you what you want. I use the top internet research tools to provide a solution to your problems, or correct advice about a course of action you should take.
If your main mode of communication is texting rather than emailing, then I can (and did) buy a program that easily organizes and saves our text messages into PDF files that I can easily store securely on my system.
If you do not want to access your files in the cloud, or do not have a printer, I can send the documents electronically to a print store near you, pay the store to print out the documents I want to give to you, then you can go pick them up.
Simply put, I do not need to rely upon you to use tech, or know tech, that matches or exceeds mine but I can still use tech to meet your needs.

As I said above, I protect your data with encrypted, secure technology, such as Clio and Microsoft Teams (the platform we use for video conferencing). Clio Connect allows us to securely share information with each other.
Clio describes Clio Connect as follows:
“Clio Connect is designed to offer your attorney the ability to provide you with a secure portal through which you can access specific resources, such as Documents, Tasks, Calendar events and invoices, that have been shared with you in addition to a Secure Messaging feature.”
Clio Connect enables members of a firm to easily share resources and collaborate with clients, contacts, or co-counsels through a secure web-based portal (extranet).
